North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un forced hundreds of people to stand outside in the cold to witness a speech honouring his dad.

Despite the maximum temperature reportedly being -15 degrees celcius, people stood for over thirty minutes listening at the celebratory event marking the 80th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong Il, who died in 2011.

It is believed that the North Korean leader had a heater under his platform as wires were pictured running underneath it during the event on Tuesday in the northern city of Samjiyon.

The speech praised Kim Jong Il as a “stepping stone” leader who left a “revolutionary legacy” for his son.

Top official Ri Il Hwan praised the late Kim for building up the military to challenge “US Imperialists.”

Tuesday’s event was the first “National Meeting held since July 2019. Such events typically take place before a major holiday, such as the birthdays of the former leaders.

North Korea maintains that Kim Jong Il was born in a “secret camp” at Mount Paektu, near Samjiyon, on February 16, 1942 but Soviet Union records show he was actually born in the Russian Far East near Khabarovsk in 1941.

The news follows former US President Donald Trump saying that he and the North Korean leader are still in touch.

Maggie Haberman, a White House correspondent for The New York Times, said to CNN: "As we know, he had a fixation on this relationship."

The claim is made in Haberman's upcoming book, Confidence Man, which alleges the former president and North Korean dictator "fell in love" after exchanging letters with one another.

Despite three meetings discussing nuclear weapons breaking down between the two world leaders, Trump claims they are still in firm contact with one another.

Ms Haberman has said that Trump's claims could not be verified and may not be true.

She said: "What he says and what's actually happening are not always in concert, but he has been telling people that he has maintained some kind of correspondence or discussion with Kim Jong-un."

Kim is the only foreign leader that Trump has claimed to still be in contact with.
